Varanasi, September 19: After spending years competing on the cricket field, Banaras Locomotive Works (BLW) employee Ashish Yadav has taken on a new and significant responsibility in Indian Railways cricket. With an experience of playing 117 matches across various formats, Yadav has been entrusted by the Railway Sports Promotion Board (RSPB), New Delhi, with the responsibility of serving as a selector for the Indian Railways Ranji Trophy Cricket Team.
Currently working as an Office Superintendent at BLW, Yadav began his domestic cricket career with Uttar Pradesh. He represented Uttar Pradesh in the Ranji Trophy from 2006 to 2010 and later represented Indian Railways from 2010 to 2019. During his playing career, he participated in major tournaments including the Ranji Trophy, Vijay Hazare Trophy, Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Duleep Trophy, Deodhar Trophy, Vizzy Trophy and Indian Universities competitions. He also represented the Central Zone.
A left-handed batsman and slow left-arm orthodox bowler, Yadav established himself as an effective all-rounder. His long stint in competitive cricket gave him valuable exposure to different match situations and helped him develop a close understanding of batting and bowling techniques, fitness, mental strength, team requirements and performance under pressure.
With his new role as a selector, Yadav will now draw upon this extensive experience to identify promising cricketers for the Indian Railways Ranji Trophy team. His responsibility will involve assessing players on the basis of their ability, consistency, commitment and overall potential.
Having experienced the challenges of competitive cricket himself, Yadav brings a player’s perspective to the selection process. His journey reflects the importance of discipline, patience, teamwork and the ability to maintain consistent performance in demanding situations.
The transition from player to selector marks a new chapter in Yadav’s cricketing career. His experience of representing Uttar Pradesh, Indian Railways and the Central Zone over the years will now be utilised in identifying and nurturing new cricketing talent. The new responsibility is also a matter of pride for BLW and an inspiration for young players aspiring to build a career in the sport.
